Evidence suggests reiki is a safe, cost-effective, and noninvasive alternative therapy with some health benefits. To reduce risks, it’s important to work with a therapist who holds a bodywork license in your state.
Reiki is a Japanese energy healing approach based on the belief that a healer can channel universal energy and transmit it to a receiver to facilitate health and well-being.
In general, reiki
For example, a 2024 systematic review on the effects of reiki in cancer patients reported that none of the five reviewed studies reported any reiki side effects. Instead, researchers found that reiki consistently led to reduced fatigue and pain levels in study participants.
Another systematic review from 2022 on the effects of reiki over placebo for mental health symptoms noted that none of the 26 randomized controlled trials they reviewed reported side effects of reiki.
Still, everybody is unique and may respond differently to healing experiences.
Although evidence on reiki consistently suggests it’s safe for people of all ages and health statuses, consider asking a reiki practitioner and a healthcare professional about recommended protocols to reduce discomfort during and after a session.
No dangers directly related to receiving reiki have been reported. To maximize safety, consider the following steps:
- Check with your local licensing and health authorities about license and board requirements. Most states require reiki practitioners to at least have a massage therapy or similar license, but requirements may vary.
- Work with trained and licensed individuals only. You can use local and state websites to look up someone’s license and verify that it is current and not delinquent.
- Avoid practitioners who present reiki as a therapy that cures disease. Research indicates reiki has multiple health benefits, but this doesn’t mean it replaces medical advice or treatment.
- Find a healthcare professional who practices Reiki. Many nurses, acupuncturists, and doctors of osteopathic medicine practice reiki or have someone in their practice who does.
- Once you find a reiki practitioner, ask them about their level of training, experience with your specific concerns, and what to expect during and after a session.
Reiki is considered a safe and noninvasive energy healing modality. No side effects have been associated with this practice.
If you’re interested in working with a Reiki practitioner, make sure to verify that they meet your state or local licensing requirements.
